Whether we consciously use it or not, artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that is integral to our daily work.

In many sectors and job roles, it already functions as a colleague. In some cases, its touch is obvious – the customer service chatbot that helps to lighten our caseload.

In other ways, AI is an unsung hero; operating in the background – the cyber protection that lies behind our commercial interactions, for example.

The new wave of AI.

Generative AI is the new wave of Artificial Intelligence. ChatGPT, Google Bard, Bing Chat, and DeepMind’s Alpha Code are all examples of Generative AI.

These tools take human inputs and use them to create something new.  These creations are wide-reaching; art, music, and code are all examples of content that can be created using Generative AI.

Proving generative AI is firmly embedded in the mainstream consciousness, search interest in ChatGPT has reached a 2,633% boost since its launch.

The reach of Generative AI.

Not only is it intuitive, smart, and helpful, but end users like it too.

ChatGPT reached a million users in just five days after it launched in November 2022.  By January 2023, it had reached 100 million monthly active users. To put its popularity into perspective, TikTok nine months to hit the same numbers.

Research has shown that a cover letter generated by ChatGPT managed to get its unqualified “author” into the top 20% of applicants for a communications consultant role at a marketing company.

It has also passed Google’s level 3 engineering coding interview. for a software engineering job. No mean feat as it navigates pretty complex technical language, job descriptions, and deliverables.

Generative AI and careers.

57% of senior IT leaders believe generative AI is a game changer. It is now firmly embedded in the mainstream consciousness.

What jobs will Generative AI create?

The World Economic Forum predicts that AI technology will create 97 million new jobs by 2025.  As AI integrates across multiple industries, primarily these are likely to relate to the development and maintenance of AI and automation.

Research has shown that there has been a 245% increase in internet searches for AI jobs.   Analysts have put this down to both people searching for jobs in the AI industry, as well as those worried if their’s is a role that may be at risk of being replaced by AI.

These are some emerging tech roles that may be created thanks to Generative AI.

  • Data detectives or scientists
  • Prompt engineers
  • Robotics engineers
  • Machine managers
  • Python programmers – a critical language for AI development.

Additionally, AI trainers and those with modelling related capabilities, computational intelligence, machine learning, mathematics, psychology, linguistics, and neuroscience professionals will also be in demand.

Generative AI and non-tech sectors.

PwC predicts that AI-assisted healthcare technician roles will also see an upward surge.  One sector that is already creating thriving thanks to Generative AI is automated transportation.  Tesla, Uber, and Google are investing billions in AI-driven self-driving cars and trucks.

Very few jobs are likely to resist the advances in AI.   Even those that directly swerve it are likely to adopt AI tools that speed up their processes.  74% of employers predict that ChatGPT et al will increase their employee’s productivity.

In sum.

Many job roles are likely to be performed by AI in the (near) future. Customer service chatbots, for example. Software will be able to perform many of the duties in the admin domain too. Manufacturing is a sector that will see millions of jobs replaced with smart and efficient machinery.

However, AI will also create new roles.  Ones that are committed to the development and maintenance of the technology and tools. Its reach will only get longer. Its huge usership added to its ability to learn, means it’ll only become more sophisticated with the inevitable volume of use.

With great power though comes great responsibility! There has to be clarity and accountability over responsible use, trust, security, and ethics if its potential is to have a positive effect on our lives, careers, and the services we access in the future.
