Whatever your employees’ seniority, job title, or location your team likes to know they are appreciated and that their contribution is valued.

1. Celebrate important milestones.

Could you hold a celebration to recognise an employee’s achievement?

Now that work lockdowns and social distancing restrictions have been lifted, most teams are working some of the time in the office. As a result, these are easier to arrange. If your team is remote, this could be held virtually.  In this scenario, perhaps you could go the extra mile and arrange for a food or treat delivery? This way you can still all raise a glass or share a meal together to celebrate.

2. Recognise in writing.

Leaders may like to acknowledge great work in a personalised email or certificate.  Make sure the achievement is given the exposure it deserves by copying in key execs or colleagues.

3. Host check-ins.

Be these online or in person, a group meeting is a great way to let the wider team know of achievements or successes.

4. Formal reviews.

Specific accomplishments can be acknowledged during regular performance reviews. These meetings show you value the contribution of all employees. It also offers a platform for a discussion about what the individual could achieve in the future, and shows you care about their professional development.

5. Encourage professional growth.

Professional growth and development are very important to employees. Therefore, one way in which you could reward achievement is to help pay for professional courses or certifications.

6. Reach out.

Acknowledging the work of an employee isn’t just about celebrating what is achieved. It is also about supporting that individual in the work they are already doing. Could you call your team members to ask how they are doing? This is especially important if your team is remote or hybrid.

7. Acknowledge and reward.

If your organisation or industry runs a reward scheme, you may like to nominate an individual for internal or external accolades. Could you encourage peer nominations or feature your team member in a company newsletter, for example.

8. Time-based rewards.

Of course, this would need to be Okayed by HR, but time is a gift.  Could you reward exceptional work with a paid day off or an extra holiday day?

9. Develop new leaders.

People love to feel valued, and that they are succeeding in their role. Could you promote internally if a person is consistently overperforming? Could they become a mentor for more junior team members? Opportunities for professional development should be made public and promoted company-wide.

10. Introduce them to senior team members.

Could you make sure your team is given exposure to company executives by inviting them along to your team meetings? A personal “thank you” for a job well done from the C Suite will go a long way in making your team feel valued and appreciated. It will also be a motivational tool and drive them to repeat desirable behaviors or work.
