While there is no substitute for hands-on marketing experience, having a marketing CV that is rich with qualifications and marketing certifications will certainly add value to your application. Hiring managers deal with hundreds of CVs which land in their Inbox daily, so why not do something that will separate yourself from the pack, and learn a few things while you are at it?

Marketing Certifications: The Benefits.

Completing a marketing qualification will undoubtedly improve your employability.  Spending time on your own professional development is an investment that pays off.

By gaining additional certifications, you will:

  • Demonstrate to employers that you are eager to learn. In the world of digital marketing this is very important. Digital channels change so often, so keeping ahead of the game is crucial to remaining relevant.
  • Demonstrate to employers that you’re a hard worker.  You are working on the certificate in your spare time, after all.
  • Gain exposure to a channel that you might not ordinarily use…Facebook or PPC for example.
  • Identify knowledge gaps. “You do not know what you do not know”.  Completing certifications will help you identify these areas for improvement, and will help to fill the holes with some theory at least.

Marketing Certifications: The Resources.

Searching for the right marketing certification for you can be a little like the proverbial needle in the haystack.  What’s great is that there is a mass of resources out there.  The not so great part is wading through it all to make sure you have found the qualification that is best suited to your needs!

This next section delves a little deeper into the range of possibilities open to you.  Here we examine a gamut of marketing certifications. We cover qualifications of every shape, size and to suit every budget.

Marketers everywhere will find something that suits them amongst our list.

Have you really got an excuse not to sign up?

Google Online Marketing Challenge

This marketing certification combines theory with practice.  Students are given an Adwords budget of $250 to spend amongst a team of between 3-6 people.

It’s not open to everyone though.  Students must be either on a graduate course or an undergraduate course to take part in this.

Having this qualification on your CV will look great though, and is a fantastic way to get hands-on experience with Google Adwords.

WordStream PPC University

PPC University is a free resource that is brought to you by the PPC experts at WordStream.  PPC is a complicated topic and one that beginners may find overwhelming. In light of this, these qualifications are organised, manageable and structured.  They teach the basics of Paid Search as well as the more advanced PPC strategies that will suit marketers of all experience levels.

Google Academy for Ads

You’d expect the giants at Google to go above and beyond, and they don’t disappoint.  The Google Academy offers the following marketing certifications:

Google Partners

Here students can complete the Google Individual Qualifications (IQ) for both Adwords and the industry-leading, Google Analytics.

Google Digital Academy

The Google Digital Academy brings together the best educational resource that Google has to offer.  These certifications will help marketers develop the skills that are required across all digital channels and capabilities.

Google Analytics Academy

Google Analytics Academy offers courses for both beginners and the more advanced marketer.  Its educational programs are designed for students wishing to learn more about Google’s measurement tools, and how businesses can be grown through intelligent data collection and analysis.

Google Digital Garage

Google’s Digital Garage offers students the opportunity to gain new skills which will help them to excel in the digital world. They are flexible and personalised qualifications that aim to give marketers just beginning their marketing careers the personal and professional leverage they need to get started.

Google Primer

Google Primer is a lovely little mobile app, delivering students bite-sized pieces of educational content which continually changes with the digital landscape.  These interactive lessons are quick to complete and can be consumed in as little as 5 minutes. You will never be left idle in a queue again!

Neil Patel’s MBA in Internet Marketing

There are no bells and whistles to this marketing MBA.  Sadly, this qualification isn’t going to give you a nice badge for your LinkedIn profile nor a certificate to put on your wall.

However, what it will give you in spades is exposure to the digital marketing genius from one of the world’s most influential marketers.   Follow the link to the 12 guides and 2 courses endorsed by Neil Patel. He lays out what you should complete, and how you should structure your learning.

An MBA from Harvard will cost you a whopping $95-$100 thousand dollars. Patel’s equivalent program is free…Can you really afford to miss out on this opportunity to kickstart your internet marketing career?

Marketing Certifications: The Cheaper Courses.

If your budget extends a little further than ‘free’, then these options are well worth a bit of investigation.

Hootsuite Social Marketing Certification

Hootsuite is a leading social media platform and one that we are pretty keen on.

Primarily, this is a platform which provides marketers with a hub where they are able to post and schedule social media content.  Professionals are also able to gather analytics on what is and what isn’t working and adjust their social strategy accordingly.

It makes sense then that Hootsuite should have their own social media marketing certification.  While $199 is not super expensive, it is still a lot more expensive than free! The assessment itself doesn’t exactly scream “academia” either.  It comprises of a multiple choice questionnaire, so does not really lend much gravitas to the certification.

Facebook Blueprint Certification

Paid social is a highly sought after skill at the moment.  By completing this Facebook certification, you will certainly stand out in the job market.   Adding this marketing certification to your arsenal is not only a great chance to develop your paid social skills, but will also add a string (or two) to your marketing bow!

Each of the exams costs around $150 and you will have to complete 2 exams to be awarded one of the following certificates:

  • Facebook Certified Planning Professional
  • Facebook Certified Buying Professional

Coursera Digital Marketing Specialisation

This is a comprehensive overview taught by industry leaders and offers an education into the latest digital marketing skills. Students apply the learned theory to project-based work. The result is a series of certifications which can be badged up to your LinkedIn profile and CV!

LinkedIn Learning

For around $29 per month, users can have access to ALL of LinkedIn’s learning resources.  However, some premium LinkedIn subscriptions will give you access to the entire learning suite for free.   These learning opportunities are hosted by Lynda.com after LinkedIn acquired the learning platform in 2015.

LinkedIn Learning doesn’t provide you with any kind of marketing certifications per se, however, eager marketers can adorn their LinkedIn profile with all sorts of achievements as evidence of their endeavours.

Marketing Certifications: The Expensive (£500+)

Should your pockets be a little deeper, you may like to look into one of these marketing certifications.

CIM Awards

The CIM is The Chartered Institute of Marketing and offers both qualifications and training to its members.  Designed to build skills and confidence, marketers in possession of these highly reputable qualifications will undoubtedly add gravitas to their CV. They do not come without a price though.

There is an initial registration fee of £55 and end-of-course assessment fees totalling £200.  Marketers will also need to factor in the cost of each individual course (which are not disclosed), so at the very least, there is a £250 price tag attached.

Google Squared

As well as the free options from Google we spoke about earlier, they also offer a paid certification.

The Squared Online Certificate in Digital Marketing commands a hefty £2,000 price tag.  Perhaps the considerable cost can be explained by the advanced level of education and/or experience needed to sign up for this particular certificate.

To be considered, you must either:

  • Hold a first or second class honours degree.
  • A level 4 marketing qualification, such as the CIM Professional Certificate in Marketing
  • At least 3 years of experience in a marketing or digital role.

For a full outline of the course, head on over to the website.  It is an extensive and detailed curriculum, and would undoubtedly be an incredible investment in personal and professional development.  The significant sheen it would add to any marketing CV goes without saying!

Udacity Nanodegree

Udacity’s extensive online Nanodegree programs encourage applications from digital talent who wish to be “in demand”.

The Digital Marketing Nanodegree comprises of practical based learning opportunities across the whole digital landscape. Students will run live campaigns and analyse real data while building their portfolio of work.

There are no educational prerequisites for these courses and learning runs over 3 months.  They are pretty pricey though and will cost marketers €999.

The IDM

The IDM are the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing.  Their certifications cater to every level of marketing ability, experience, skill set and area of interest.

The courses range in duration and location, with prices beginning in the region of about £700.

General Assembly

These courses are available in both location-based learning and online formats.

The General Assembly operates primarily from the US, however, the Digital Marketing course is also offered from a London location.

It is a part-time program and spans 10 weeks.  There is also an accelerated learning route which is an option should you have a week to spare!

The course syllabus is thorough and spans the whole digital marketing ecosystem.  Topics include data-driven marketing and SEO right through to campaign planning and budgeting.

The cost of this particular marketing certification is £2800.  It is well endorsed and the instructors are both seasoned and specialists within their fields of expertise.

Marketing Certifications: The Astronomically Expensive (£50,000+)

The rising costs of University tuition is well documented, and so this option will not be open to many.

University Degrees in Marketing can cost students upwards of £50,000.

However, if this option is one that is open to you, then his recently published list highlights the UK universities of marketing repute.

Whilst degree qualifications will undoubtedly add significant prowess to a marketing CV, it most definitely is not the only option open to marketers.  Our extensive list of resources is evidence that you don’t need to spend a fortune to make your fortune in marketing!

The free and cheap options will provide you with both the theory and practical skills you will need to add gravitas to your LinkedIn profile and CV.
