Its rich figures are worthy of high esteem. Together, Bristol and Bath, join forces to comprise the South West Digital Cluster….a region that has enjoyed an 87% growth of digital business, has an annual turnover of £8.1 billion and employs a 35,000 strong tech army.
In fact, it has such a high digital concentration, that The Silicon Gorge hosts 4 times more digital firms than the national average….17% of which can be categorised as firms of high growth.

A quick sweep of Bristol’s tech landscape points to some noteworthy residents. Hewlett Packard, EE, global mobile tech giants Somo, XMOS. The region is also famed for its digital creativity.
Creative media firms such as IMDb operate from here, not to mention the highly acclaimed and Academy Award-winning creators of Wallace and Gromit, Aardman Animations.

What are these IT companies paying?
So, with all this opportunity, which skills are most in-demand?
If value is placed on a position by salary, you are highly desirable in Bristol if you have Data Architect as the strapline on your CV.
In this position, you can expect to earn an average of almost £72k annually. Following this, as a Tech Lead you will be rewarded with a salary in the region of £54k and if you fall into the categories of a Systems Engineer, a Python Developer or a Product Manager you can expect to earn somewhere in the region of £51-52k per year.
In broader terms, research conducted by Indeed suggests that there have been industry shifts which are affecting the job search of candidates across the tech space.
Current trends across the ecosystem have affected the mindset of UK tech professionals, and are directly steering job seekers toward certain lines of specialism.
Job searches for careers in Blockchain grew by 224% last year, whilst candidate interest in Cyber Security careers leapt by 196%. Creative Digital Media Apprenticeship searches rose by a huge 240%, suggesting that candidates were prepared to forego a massive salary in order to get their foot in the door of this desirable industry.
Locally, research conducted within the startup community, points to the lack of highly skilled workers as a challenge to the growth of their business, with more than 70% of local startups believing this to be true.
